What is an Author-Based Publishing Collective? with Jennifer Stevenson

I am co-president of Book View Café, the oldest, largest, best-known author-owned publishing collective. We founded in 2008. Currently we have 30 members. We have an online bookstore and blog https://bookviewcafe.com , a newsletter https://app.mlsend.com/x4f0d5v3h9/ , multiple library distribution channels, and a publicist with relationship with book review organs like Booklist. We buy ISBNs in bulk and sell them to our members for $4 each. We are developing new marketing tools all the time - the latest is a YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@bookviewcafe . The collective "owns" almost nothing, however, except for these electronic "assets," and we run on sweat equity: we do developmental edits for each other, proofread, copyedit, design book covers, format ebooks and print books, brainstorm titles and back cover copy, help each other set up our own newsletters and drip campaigns … many, many things that indie authors try to do all by themselves and mostly go crazy or give up on, because there's just. so. much.

I'd like to talk to CN members about how we started, what we do for each other, what we can and can't do, and (most importantly) how much easier it would be for someone to start their own collective nowadays. To start a collective today, all you would need is a common bookstore theme, WordPress, and a plugin for selling (like Woocommerce) … and a lot of hard-working volunteers.
Jennifer Stevenson lives in Chicago with her stagehand husband and two bossy cats. She writes comedy in many forms - five series so far; Hinky Chicago, Slacker Demons, Coed Demon Sluts, Liars in Love, and Backstage Boys. She is co-president of Book View Café, a member of Chicago North since 1998, and a Nebula and Locus Award nominee for her first novel, Trash Sex Magic. She is currently at work on a series of industrial espionage thrillers with absolutely no sex in them.

Strategic Thinking for Authors with Jen Greybeal

Sometimes it’s the little things that block progress and sometimes there’s a boulder on the path. Whether you are developing big story elements or identifying the small details that make the story special, there’s nothing quite like the frustration of knowing something is missing. Let’s dive into the science of frustration, how to triage a scene that isn’t working and the best way to brainstorm solutions. This session includes time to dissect real issues facing the participants.

Jen Graybeal (she/her) is dedicated to empowering authors through encouraging feedback, collaborative problem solving and gently-applied tough love. In ten years of coaching, workshops, and editing projects, she has helped over a thousand authors create stories they are proud of and businesses that align with their individual vision of success. Jen is a Certified Creativity Coach with a degree in English, an ever-expanding TBR pile, and a furball assistant that is usually on her lap. Visit her website for client testimonials at  www.jengraybeal.com or follow her on Instagram, Threads, Blue Sky, and TikTok: @JenTheEditor.

Quickies: Writing & Publishing Flash Fiction with Melanie Dusseau

Got a writing cramp from the novelists' marathon? Try sprinting with romance-themed flash fiction! This program will provide a brief overview of freelance and publishing opportunities for micro fictions in the Romance genre.

Hone your craft skills, explore and subvert popular tropes, flex scene setting mojo, discover intimacy dexterity in miniature, and practice brevity on an idea for a teeny-tiny love story of 700-1200 words. An interactive discussion of the publishing market for flash fiction will be covered. Get inspired with this short-and-sweet take on Romance, and get ready to give readers everything from the blush of a warm glow to a sizzling hot flash.

Melanie Dusseau is an associate professor on English at The University of Findlay in Ohio. She has published several flash length "5-Minute Romances" in Woman's World magazine, as well as essays and a collection of poetry. When she's not writing, reading, fangirling romance authors, or grading papers, she is hard at work revising and querying her debut romantasy novel.
